How to choose a children's pattern that will appeal to both children and parents

Як обрати дитячий патерн, який сподобається і дітям, і батькам

When I create patterns for children's products, I always try to look at them through the eyes of two people at once: the child and the parents. For the child, it's important that the drawing is interesting and evokes emotions, while for the parents, it's crucial that the design looks stylish, doesn't become tiresome, and harmoniously fits into the interior or the brand's collection.

If you sew children's clothing, create textiles, toys, or educational products, the choice of pattern directly affects how in-demand your product will be.

What patterns do parents choose most often?

In recent years, I have noticed several themes that consistently remain popular.

Forest Animals

Bears, bunnies, foxes, hedgehogs, and owls create a sense of coziness and warmth. Such patterns are perfect for children's clothing, bedding, and nursery decor.

Space

Stars, planets, rockets, and the moon appeal to children because of the atmosphere of adventure and discovery. And to parents, because such designs remain relevant for a long time.

Transport

Airplanes, cars, trains, and ships remain among the most popular subjects for boys and are increasingly used in gender-neutral collections.

Dinosaurs

This is a true classic among children's prints. Watercolor illustrations in calm pastel shades work particularly well.

Clouds and Rainbows

If the product is intended for newborns or babies under one year old, such patterns help create a soft and calm atmosphere.

What colors are parents choosing now?

While bright and saturated colors were once popular, today parents more often pay attention to a calmer palette:

  • beige;

  • milk;

  • cream;

  • pale pink;

  • sage green;

  • light blue;

  • light gray.

These shades look modern and easily combine with various interior styles.

How to choose a pattern according to the child's age

For newborns, I recommend choosing simple shapes, large elements, and calm colors.

For children aged one to three, animals, nature motifs, transport, and educational themes are excellent.

For older children, more complex themes can already be used: space, dinosaurs, fairy-tale characters, world maps, and adventure stories.

What's currently trending?

Among my clients and customers, the following are particularly popular:

  • watercolor illustrations;

  • nature motifs;

  • gender-neutral designs;

  • vintage themes;

  • patterns that look modern and remain relevant for many years.

My advice to entrepreneurs

If you are choosing a pattern for your collection, don't just focus on a pretty picture. Think about who you are creating your product for. A child will pay attention to the plot and characters, while parents will focus on the color scheme, style, and how well the drawing will fit into their daily lives.

The most successful children's patterns are those that simultaneously delight the child and make parents want to purchase the product. 💛💙
